European football's season opener
The UEFA Super Cup is contested annually between the winners of the Champions League and the winners of the Europa League, marking the traditional start of the European football season. The 2026 edition brought together Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Wednesday 12 August, and PSG won it 2-0 to retain the trophy they took from Tottenham Hotspur in Udine a year earlier.
It was the first UEFA Super Cup ever staged in Austria, and the first major European club final the country has hosted. With a capacity of 30,071, Red Bull Arena was among the smallest venues to stage the fixture in its modern era - which made every seat, and every hospitality package, count.
This match has been played. The 2026 UEFA Super Cup finished PSG 2-0 Aston Villa on 12 August 2026 in Salzburg. Hospitality for the 2027 edition is not yet on sale - UEFA has confirmed neither a date nor a venue.
How they got there
The reigning European champions against the Europa League winners.
Paris Saint-Germain
Champions League winners in 2025/26 and Super Cup holders going into the match, having beaten Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in Udine in 2025. They retained it in Salzburg with a 2-0 win - back-to-back Super Cups.
Aston Villa
Europa League winners in 2025/26, and one of English football's great comeback stories - from a club fighting relegation to European champions. Their first Super Cup appearance ended in defeat, but the run to it brought a significant British following to Salzburg.
Aston Villa hospitality →The 2027 UEFA Super Cup
The 2027 UEFA Super Cup will be contested by the winners of the 2026/27 Champions League and the winners of the 2026/27 Europa League. Neither is known yet: the Champions League final is at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday 5 June 2027, and the Europa League final precedes it in May.
UEFA has not confirmed a date or a venue for the 2027 edition. The Super Cup is traditionally played in mid-August, in the gap between the end of one season and the start of the next, so a date in August 2027 is the reasonable expectation - but it is an expectation, not a confirmation, and we will not present it as one.
